Obese woman wins compensation for collapsed toilet seat

« Back to News Headlines

A woman has been awarded compensation following an injury she sustained when a toilet seat collapsed under her.

The accident happened whilst the woman was employed by Birmingham Council and she has received almost £2K compensation.

Local press has reported that this claim is 1 out of 274 claims successfully made by staff against the Council in the last 5 years. This has resulted in them paying more in compensation than any other council, with a total settlement bill of almost £5m.

The paper obtained the figures via a freedom of information request which also revealed that another member of staff claimed over £1K after having their big toe broken when a table fell on them. Another received over £3K after falling on a pathway which was deemed defective.

A council spokesperson commented that the claims represent a very small percentage of their overall workforce. They also said that although staff safety was paramount, there will always be scope for improvement.
